A small-format Amitabha Buddha tsa-tsa from the ES Collection. The form is machine-demoulded for consistency, then individually coloured by hand, combining efficient production with visible human finishing at a miniature scale.

THE OBJECT · ABOUT THIS PIECE

Small Amitabha Buddha 01

A small-format Amitabha Buddha tsa-tsa from the ES Collection. The form is machine-demoulded for consistency, then individually coloured by hand, combining efficient production with visible human finishing at a miniature scale.

THE PROCESS · WHY THIS PIECE IS DIFFERENT

Machine-formed for consistency, finished by hand, then included in a large communal prayer ceremony.

ES follows a different making route from HC and CS. The tsa-tsa forms are machine-demoulded, then individually hand-coloured by ordinary artisans or workshop workers. Finished pieces are also placed together with other objects during large-scale Buddhist prayer ceremonies to receive prayers and blessings as part of the gathering. The significance lies in this combination of accessible production, human hand-finishing and participation in a living prayer context—not in a claim of guaranteed spiritual effect.

THE FIGURE · ICONOGRAPHY

Amitabha Buddha

Amitabha is the Buddha traditionally associated with Sukhavati, the Western Pure Land, and is widely understood as the Buddha of Infinite or Boundless Light. In Buddhist art he is frequently shown in meditation and appears at the centre of rich Pure Land imagery.

Boundless Light

Reflected in the traditional meaning of Amitabha’s name.

Sukhavati

The Western Pure Land associated with Amitabha.

Meditation

A recurring feature of Amitabha iconography.

Lotus imagery

Closely connected with visual representations of the Pure Land.

Spiritual aspiration

Pure Land traditions focus on conditions supportive of Buddhist awakening.

CULTURAL BACKGROUND

Amitabha Buddha in context

Amitabha became one of the most widely revered celestial Buddhas across Mahayana Asia. His tradition travelled across languages and regions while retaining a strong relationship with Sukhavati, the Western Pure Land. Paintings and sculptures can place Amitabha amid bodhisattvas, lotus imagery and assembled beings, turning the Pure Land into a richly visualised Buddhist realm. This miniature tsa-tsa compresses that far-reaching tradition into a very small, hand-painted object.

THE MAKING · PROCESS

How this piece was completed

The tsa-tsa form is machine-demoulded, then individually hand-coloured by artisans or workshop workers before final assembly. Finished ES pieces are included during large-scale Buddhist prayer ceremonies, where they are placed with other objects for prayers and blessing rites. The dimensions and weight refer only to this SKU, and no gold-plated finish is claimed.
