THE OBJECT · ABOUT THIS PIECE

Heritage Yellow Jambhala 02

A second, independently finished Yellow Jambhala tsa-tsa from the HC Heritage Collection. Hand-pressed from local Shiqu clay, naturally dried and painted by a monk, it is a separate physical object with its own dimensions, weight, surface and colour variation, enclosed in a silver case with an acrylic cover.

THE HERITAGE · WHY THIS BATCH IS DIFFERENT

The same early ritual batch — but a completely individual object.

33ORIGINAL PIECES
49RITUAL DAYS
7PRESERVED

HC began with a first batch of 33 tsa-tsas made by local monks and long-term practitioners following traditional ritual practice. The clay preparation included traditional additions such as Tibetan medicinal ingredients, nectar pills and saffron, while mantra recitation and prayer accompanied the making. The completed pieces were then kept in a shrine or practice space for continued recitation and blessing. Only 7 pieces that remained through the full 49-day ritual period entered the HC collection. HC-YJ-02 is one of those surviving individual objects, not a duplicate of HC-YJ-01.

THE FIGURE · ICONOGRAPHY

Yellow Jambhala

Yellow Jambhala is one of the most recognisable Buddhist wealth deities in Tibetan art. His imagery traditionally brings together abundance, treasure and regal presence, most famously through the jewel-bearing mongoose. The symbolism is cultural and devotional rather than a promise of monetary results.

Treasure imagery

The mongoose releasing jewels is one of the best-known signs of Jambhala.

Abundance

Associated with the wish for sufficient resources rather than scarcity.

Regal form

Ornament and posture give Yellow Jambhala a king-like visual identity.

Continuity

The yellow form appears repeatedly across Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist art.

CULTURAL BACKGROUND

Yellow Jambhala in context

Yellow Jambhala belongs to a broader family of Jambhala manifestations. Over centuries, painters and sculptors in the Himalayan world retained his core attributes while varying scale, colour and style. This continuity matters on a small tsa-tsa: even at intimate size, the figure remains connected to a much larger Buddhist visual tradition. What makes this piece compelling is the combination of that recognisable iconography with the non-uniform surface of an individually pressed and painted object.

THE MAKING · PROCESS

How this piece was completed

Hand-pressed from local Shiqu clay in a traditional mould, naturally dried and hand-painted by a monk. The recorded artisan is Sonam of the Shiqu workshop. The silver case was produced separately; series planning, colour direction and casing customisation were brand-led. No silver purity is claimed.
