THE OBJECT · ABOUT THIS PIECE

Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara · ES-WD-TA-01

An ES Collection Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara piece made from a machine-moulded base and finished individually by hand. After production, the piece was included in a large-scale Buddhist prayer ceremony together with other devotional objects, adding a genuine religious context without turning the object into a supernatural promise.

THE PROCESS · WHY THIS PIECE IS DIFFERENT

Machine-moulded, hand-painted, then included in a large prayer ceremony.

ES pieces begin with a machine-moulded form, providing a more consistent base structure. Colour and visible details are then finished by hand by workshop artisans or workers. After completion, the pieces are included together with other devotional objects during a large-scale Buddhist prayer ceremony, where they remain present for collective prayers and blessing rites. This series therefore combines repeatable production with a real layer of hand finishing and religious context.

THE FIGURE · ICONOGRAPHY

Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara

The Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara is an expansive form of the bodhisattva of compassion. Tibetan traditions commonly represent this form with eleven faces and one thousand hands. The multiplication of heads, arms and eyes expresses compassion imagined as able to see suffering in many directions and respond through countless forms of activity.

Compassion

Avalokiteshvara is one of Buddhism’s central bodhisattvas of compassion.

Eleven faces

Extend the figure’s all-seeing visual presence.

One thousand arms

Represent an extraordinary capacity to respond.

Eyes in the palms

In many descriptions, reinforce the union of seeing and compassionate action.

CULTURAL BACKGROUND

Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara in context

The eleven-faced, thousand-armed form transforms the idea of compassion into a monumental visual system. Rather than being decorative excess, the multiplication is meaningful: it makes visible the aspiration to perceive suffering widely and to respond without being limited to a single pair of hands.
