THE OBJECT · ABOUT THIS PIECE

Selected Medicine Buddha 01

A compact hand-painted tsa-tsa depicting the Medicine Buddha, Bhaishajyaguru, selected for the CS Collection and presented within a metal case under a transparent protective cover. Its painted finish was completed by trained traditional artisan painters whose craft is developed through years of study and practice.

THE CRAFT · WHY THIS PIECE IS DIFFERENT

Hand-painted by trained traditional artisans, then kept in prayer for one to three days.

CS pieces are painted by skilled artisan painters trained for years in traditional Buddhist painting methods, including the disciplined colour and line work associated with thangka painting. After the hand-painting is completed, the pieces are placed for approximately 1–3 days of prayers and blessing rites. This does not make every CS piece identical: brushwork, colour density and small finishing details remain specific to the individual object.

THE FIGURE · ICONOGRAPHY

Medicine Buddha / Bhaishajyaguru

Bhaishajyaguru is widely known as the Medicine Buddha. In Tibetan and Himalayan art he is often shown in deep blue, holding the medicinal myrobalan plant and a monastic bowl. His traditional associations with medicine, healing and the alleviation of suffering belong to Buddhist religious practice and are not presented here as medical claims for the object.

Medicine and healing traditions

Bhaishajyaguru is the Buddha traditionally associated with medicine.

Myrobalan

A medicinal plant closely linked with his iconography.

Monastic bowl

Connects the figure to the disciplined life of a Buddha.

Relief of suffering

A central religious association, expressed here without claiming therapeutic effects.

CULTURAL BACKGROUND

Medicine Buddha / Bhaishajyaguru in context

The Medicine Buddha tradition is rooted in the Bhaishajyaguru Sutra and became important across Tibetan and wider Asian Buddhism. His image brings together the appearance of a Buddha with attributes linked to medicine, especially the myrobalan plant and begging bowl. In Tibetan contexts, this made the figure especially meaningful in relation to traditions of healing and the wish to relieve suffering. The same subject appears across several Asian cultures, demonstrating how one Buddhist figure could retain a shared identity while taking on different regional artistic forms.
